The Rivers Judicial Commission of Inquiry into police brutality and violation of fundamental human rights by the Nigeria Police has commenced sitting in Port Harcourt. The Commission Chairperson, Justice CHUKWUNENYE URIRI, said memoranda had been received from affected persons, the general public, corporate bodies, ministries, extra-ministerial departments and agencies, parastatals, groups and individuals.
The Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law has alleged that the Rivers State Government Judicial Commission of Inquiry on police human rights abuses consists largely of PDP members. The Institute also alleged the commission was filled with Governor NYESOM WIKE’s loyalists, stressing that the panel lacked the necessary independence and approval by Rivers people. […]
