HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP ACCUSES RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT OF PLANTING PDP MEMBERS IN JUDICIAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY ON POLICE HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES.

Written by on November 2, 2020

The Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law has alleged that the Rivers State Government Judicial Commission of Inquiry on police human rights abuses consists largely of PDP members.

The Institute also alleged the commission was filled with Governor NYESOM WIKE’s loyalists, stressing that the panel lacked the necessary independence and approval by Rivers people.

The body said based on information from the public the terms of reference of the panel deviated from those set by the Federal Government to simply receive and investigate complaints, evaluate evidence and recommend compensation.

In a statement, the Acting Executive Director, COURAGE NSIRIMOVU, said the establishment of the panel revealed a political goal to unravel matters related to politics, and not to determine and prosecute matters related to police brutality and human rights violations.

The rights group said it did not believe in the goodwill of the Federal Government or State Government to ensure justice for all the victims, alleging that the Panel was an attempt to quell the #ENDSARS and bad governance agitations in the country.
